Sometimes, it takes personal experiences to highlight the need for a better solution, and it was in this way that Helen Chen developed the idea for her business, semcorèl. “My mother lives alone, and I desperately needed a reliable solution to monitor her current health and ensure she was living safely,” says Helen, founder and CEO, semcorèl. “With my technological background and industry experience, I founded semcorèl to address the challenges experienced by all seniors and enable them to live with minimum intervention, knowing they are safe, secure, and surrounded by people who care about them.” A CA-based health, safety, and social engagement solution company, semcorèl designs and builds innovative software solutions for health and safety monitoring, medical alert, social engagement, and emergency response and markets them under the CoCo brand—which refers to Constant Companion. The firm is dedicated to improving the quality of living for seniors by providing advanced technologies that offer a 360-degree view of their health and safety to families, medical providers, and caregivers; keep seniors happy and connected with their friends and families. The complete CoCo solution supplies extra coverage for seniors living either at assisted living facilities or at home with caregivers checking on their health and safety.

Semcorèl’s flagship product, CoCo Medical Smartwatch BT1, is a wearable device integrated with industry-leading health monitoring capabilities. Unlike other smartwatches, the CoCo Watch has one purpose: to ensure seniors are safe and healthy. “Wearing the Smartwatch is like having a nurse constantly keep a track of an elderly’s readings throughout the day,” explains Helen. The CoCo Watch checks the user’s pulse rate, body temperature, blood oxygen level, sleep cycle and pattern, and can even perform an ECG.

What’s more? CoCo’s analytics platform is able to correlate the user’s heart rate with movement, which means a caregiver or family member can sense when the senior’s heart rate increases without any movement or exercise and flags this as a possible issue. CoCo also pays close attention to how often the user stands and moves around the house and lets them know when they need to do more. Notably, the CoCo Watch has a unique functionality that enables a senior to make an emergency call to their pre-designated emergency care team, by just the push of a button, in case of any danger or health scare. The device will immediately place a call from the senior’s mobile phone or send out an alert to their network of family members, neighbors, and caregivers.

As a part of its complete solution, semcorèl also offers a mobile application, CoCo App, to be used in collaboration with the CoCo Watch. It provides caregiver daily summaries of the client’s heart health and daily activity level. The CoCo App gives real-time access to the senior’s health information and a secure, private message feed for caregiver communications. Furthermore, the app’s emergency care console provides first responders with real-time vital signs, physical location, and access to medications and medical conditions, which may be critically important to treatment during an emergency. “We also look for and alert you to long term trends that may indicate areas of concern,” adds Helen. “In short, CoCo provides peace of mind for independent seniors—and their families—enabling them to live on their own but never alone.”

All of semcorèl’s products are sold through channel partners who serve seniors in in-home care, assisted living, medical outpatient, and PERS market. The firm also has a web portal, via which in-home and assisted living centers can manage their clients, handle scheduling, and enable caregivers to administer the status of their clients. “No one knows when an emergency will happen. When it does, the individual may not be able to think clearly. We will be there to ensure such seniors get the help they need at the right time,” states Helen. Forging ahead, semcorèl is looking to expand further geographically. Simultaneously, the firm is also planning on investing in cutting-edge, reliable, and accurate health and safety devices that enhance remote healthcare and assisted living. “We will continue to stay ahead of all the changes in the marketplace and ensure our products are always at the top of the line in terms of accuracy, cost, affordability, usability, and reliability,” wraps up Helen.
